A true ground breaker on many fronts — Louis Jordan originally wrote and recorded this tune as a Calypso. It was an emerging sound in North America at the time as it bubbled up from the Caribbean. The story in ‘Run Joe’ must have ushered in inspiration for many a musician as the tune has been covered and re-invented numerous times. Down in New Orleans groups such as the Neville Brothers, Bo Dollis & The Wild Magnolias and even the Dirty Dozen play it was a more African flare with touches of Highlife on top of it’s Calypso base. Perhaps it’s a product of New Orleans being the melting pot of all things Carribean!
